HUSKYMAN: DOG SLEDDING IN THE PYRENEES

04/05/2016,

Have you ever dreamed of sitting on the comfortable seat of a fairy-tale Christmas sleigh?

Being close to nature and a love of dogs are at the heart of mushing, an amazing activity for the whole family. Mushing consists of sliding over the snow on a sled pulled by dogs.

Comfortably seated on a sled pulled by 10 to 12 Husky dogs managed by their Musher Jaime Pou, this is the chance to discover the enchantment of a romantic private sled for two in Cerler (Spanish Pyrenees)

This activity organized by Huskyman is accessible for children over 1 year and the Dog sled ride lasts ca. 20 minutes.

My kids loved this experience and they really felt they were part of the animated movie Balto.

The film is based on a true story about the dog of the same name, who helped save children from the diphtheria epidemic in 1925.

In January 1925, a deadly diphtheria epidemic threatened the children of Nome. Medicine to stop the outbreak was in Anchorage, nearly a thousand miles away. Twenty sled dog teams relayed the medicine through blinding snow and temperatures that reached 40 degrees below zero. Balto, a hardy Siberian husky, led his team for the final 53 treacherous miles, arriving in Nome just 20 hours later. Newspapers and radio around the world followed the trek, fascinated by the brave team whose efforts eventually helped end the epidemic.

You can read about the complete history of the 1925 Nome Serum Run at this great site dedicated to Balto.

Also, you can visit with your kids Balto’s statue in New York City’s Central Bark. Located on the main path leading north from the Tisch Children’s Zoo, the statue bears the following inscription:

“Dedicated to the indomitable spirit of the sled dogs that relayed antitoxin six hundred miles over rough ice, across treacherous waters, through ARtic blizzards from Nenana to the relief of stricken Nome in the Winter of 1925

Jaime is an experienced Musher and an outstanding person. He explained to our kids how dog team members are given titles according to their position in the team relative to the sled and that these include leaders, swing dogs, team dogs, and wheelers.

Huskyman organizes many activities and camps for the whole family in different locations and throughout the year. You will not regret it!
