2 GREAT ART BOOKS FOR CHILDREN

01/24/2019,

If you have been reading World Kids for a while, you know that I am always looking for the best art books for children.

Today, I am thrilled to share with you two new books, both edited by Prestel Publishing, that expose children to fine arts, architecture, creativity, self-expression, sculpture, museums and history: “13 Artists children should know” and “The ART coloring book“.

13 Artists children should know” (let me suggest also that these are 13 Artists adults should know too…) is a wonderful introduction to 13 artists and their work. Written by Angela Wenzel, it starts with Leonardo da Vinci and ends with Andy Warhol, including artists like Monet, Van Goth, Matisse, and Picasso. I love that among these 13 artists, the author has also included American artist Mary Cassatt and Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.

Each artist is presented in 2-3 pages, and each entry includes a biography, some works, a timeline with important events that took place during each artist’s lifetime, tips and recommendations for further reading. There is also a very useful glossary at the end of the book that helps children understand the most important art terms.

The information can be a little overwhelming, so in my opinion, this book might be suitable for children 10+. I would also suggest focusing each time on just one artist, and using it as a complement to other art activities.

The Art Coloring Book” is a “journey through the world of art from cave paintings to contemporary art”. Illustrated by Annette Roeder, the book exposes children to the most important paintings and museums in art history, and it also encourages them to color and draw on each picture. I am really fascinated by this active and creative approach to art history!

Children learn about the evolution in art history by actually becoming artists. In a hands-on and fun way, children learn about Egyptian art, the works of Francisco de Goya or the patterns of Gustav Klimt. It is an original, well-thought and beautifully edited book that will provide hours of drawing and learning.
