AUSTRIA WITH KIDS: INNSBRUCK
Last December we made a short excursion day trip to Innsbruck, to visit the Christmas Markets of this beautiful Austrian City.
The medieval Old Town has a special feel, especially in the depths of a snowy winter.
We visited first the Christmas Market Old Town.
It is located in the historic city center of Innsbruck (just in front of the famous Golden Roof). Strolling through the market, you can find Christmas ornaments, chocolates and different stalls where you can savour tasty regional specialities and enjoy a mug of Glühwein .
We also enjoyed visiting the Family Christmas Market at Marktplatz.
It is also a beautiful Market that will delight the entire family. There is a carousel and many other attractions for children, like a beautiful candy post office.
Parents can browse a range of beautiful gifts, including these delicious chocolate tools.
Simultaneously with the Christmas Market in Innsbruck, we visited the old town and enjoyed some of its amazing architecture, including the Golden Roof, considered the city’s most prominent tourist site.
The roof was decorated with 2.738 copper tiles for Emperor Maximilian I to mark his wedding to Bianca Maria Sforza.
But our favorite visit was the original Märchengasse or “Fairy Tale street”
During the Advent , unique fairy tale pictures, pictured by life-sized figures, from different well know fairy tales are displayed on facades, windows and different corners of the old town of Innsbruck.
They are impressively illuminated and silhouette against the night sky.
There are 23 fairy tale pictures all together.
Under the many scenes are “Pinocchio”, ” The valiant little tailor”, ” Sleeping beauty”, ” Snow White and the 7 dwarfs”, ” Little red riding hood”, “Cinderella”, and many more.
And after a long fun day, I would recommend that you stop at Munding, Tirol’s oldest Konditorei-Café since 1803.
It is located just a hundred meters west of the famous Golden Roof, in the very heart of Innsbruck.
